The Importance of Immunizations at Abraham Family Medicine
Receiving your required immunizations is an essential part of avoiding a wide variety of preventable diseases and sicknesses. Immunizations, sometimes referred to as vaccinations or shots, help prevent the spread of dangerous (or even deadly) illnesses including the flu, measles, pneumonia, and more. Although they are commonly associated with children, adults need certain immunizations as well. In honor of National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM) this August, our healthcare providers are here to stress the importance of immunizations for patients of all ages.
Vaccine-preventable diseases like the mumps or whooping cough, which many people think are gone, can still pose a threat if your children are not properly immunized. Although cases of these illnesses may be rare in the US, some of them can still be commonly found in other countries. Unvaccinated children could be at risk of developing a preventable disease if they come into contact with an international traveler or while traveling themselves. If many parents in a given area choose not to vaccinate their children, it can lead to a potentially dangerous outbreak. This is why leading health organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) all strongly support vaccinations.
This August is the perfect time to think about the upcoming flu season. The flu can be challenging for anyone, but it is especially dangerous for children and the elderly who have weaker immune systems and can be more vulnerable to the virus. Receiving an annual flu vaccine (or flu shot) is the most surefire way to protect yourself and your loved ones from the flu year-round. While most people don’t think about the flu until winter, we recommend getting vaccinated for the flu in October to be prepared for the worst of flu season before it arrives.
It’s also essential for anyone traveling internationally to consult their healthcare providers to discuss travel vaccinations. A foreign ecosystem can be the host of any number of infectious diseases and viruses that can be prevented with the correct immunization planning. We strongly recommend scheduling an appointment to discuss the recommended immunizations and medications for all upcoming international travel destinations.
